DetectorBase.com, a new metal detecting resource/community focused on article based content, has announced that the official launch date will be January 15, 2007. If you're interested in taking a look before the 15th, please visit http://tmp.detectorbase.com and request a username/password. They are giving them out for the next few days to flush out any immediate bugs with the site, etc. I personally think it's a great site with massive potential!

Today, I was surfing around and found a great metal detecting blog/web site called The Beep Goes On (http://www.thebeepgoeson.com). The site had an interesting article ( little late for me discovering it ) about the White's DFX vs Minelab's SE. This was the exact thing I needed to read up on before making my purchase, even though it still solidifies my decision. This is another item mentioning the depth that can be achieved with the SE and the trade off with hard detecting in trashy areas. He mentioned that the DFX would perform better in trashy areas. The dealer that I purchased the Minelab mentioned that the 10.5 coil, that comes stock is, too large for trashy areas. I picked up a Sun Ray 8" coil, but I'm thinking about a 5" for down the road.

I've never used a coil smaller than 8" and I'm hesitant to do so. I would really like to have a try before purchasing. I just wish my town has the gear and experienced dealers to help in these decisions. I always feel like I'm flying blind with some of these purchases. I do feel like I'm taking my time and doing my homework.
